We find ourselves unerringly drawn to the wines of the southern Rhône not only for the evident value for money that these wines represent, but also because the growers of this delightful region are just plain lucky! Any Bordelais in possession of the merest moiety of his marbles must be looking enviously south and wondering why he should not desert the cold and damp and move to a place where winemaking is a pleasure. For the Rhône, their 2002 harvest was diluted by rain, but barring this year, they have brought in great vintage after great vintage since 1997 and the latest, 2007, is no exception. So here are three reds, from estates that we follow, that are expressive of their locality and vintage and, for your diversion, a white from the north which I could not resist including for its appetising, fresh, qualities. Mixed case of red and white: Peak Shiraz: Big, full-bodied and loaded with ripe blackberry fruit. Benchmark Aussie Shiraz. Peak Riesling: We thought we'd 'Peaked' at our first vintage of these Clare Valley classics, but they keep on knocking our socks off. This Riesling is immensely appealing, with flavours of lime peel and citrus lending appetising dryness. Not to mention perfect with firm-fleshed fish. It's a neat touch that flame-tressed Jane Mitchell should have chosen vineyards in the Auburn Hills as its source. Set on a seam of slate (bedrock of many German vineyards) the Clare is famed for scintillating Rieslings.

Tim Gramp is the scion of a winemaking dynasty that embodies great Aussie wine, producing sumptuous reds and a lean, citrus tinged Riesling that are classics. Mac Forbes is all-Australian but heavily influenced by the 'European' quest for delicacy. The jury is still out as to whether we'll see any snow this year. We're a team split into two over the snow issue; those who love it and always get excited at the sight of a drifting flake, and those who see it as a harbinger of doom (the latter, funnily enough, tend to be the group that drive into work).
